Chair’s CommentsLook Out Your Window
Take a look out your window, or a drive down the street. Look around your neighborhood and community, what do you see? You see the direct affects of local government. Whether it is your local school board, city council, or county council , decisions are made every day, by members of those bodies, which affect you and your neighbors directly every minute of every day. The political leanings of these bodies can mean the difference between your children learning evolution or creationism in school; your family living in a city that respects your community’s needs; or unmitigated growth gobbling up all of our unincorporated open space. These may be policies discussed on the national stage, but the real decision makers are right here, in your backyard. They are office holders at the local level, and the candidates that seek local elected office, that make the decisions that affect us day-to-day. The 21st District Democrats have worked tirelessly over the past few years to recruit, support, and elect qualified candidates to these offices. We have done a fantastic job of getting out the vote and expanding our “farm club”—this year is no different. We have the opportunity to change the make-up of our local government again, thereby securing our values, by electing those that share our cause, to offices in local government. This cannot become a reality without the tireless efforts of hardworking volunteers, like you. During a conversation with one of our super PCO’s last month I was reminded of a certain campaign truth. That being that if you can turn-out just ten hardworking volunteers, you can elect anyone to local office. It’s true, just a fraction of the voting public, when dedicated to the cause, can change the face of an elected body. There is not a lot to it, just get involved and you can impose the change you wish to see, right here in your backyard. During the coming weeks and months we will be working hard as an organization to do just that. This election cycle we will deploy our campaign machine to secure our local government for our community and hone our collective skills for the future races. It is not enough to work for today, as our work today eases our burden tomorrow. Richard Wright, Chair 21st LDDO
